There's no such thing as a "practising astrophysicist." Anyone with a graduate degree in astrophysics would hopefully be able to spell better than that, and would have a basic grasp of physics, which this person clearly lacks.

The world has existed for four billion years. Is it reasonable to expect that it will come to an end in less than four years? And all because of a Mayan calendar? Use some common sense.

The most interesting astronomical events in 2012 will be an annular eclipse of the Sun on 2012 May 20, a total eclipse of the Sun on 2012 Nov 13, and a transit of the planet Venus across the face of the Sun on 2012 Jun 06.

Scientists don't expect anything out of the ordinary to happen in the year 2012, or specifically on the date December 21, except for the solstice, which happens every year.

None of the "predicted" happenings for 2012 hold up under close scrutiny. "Planet X" and "Nibiru" simply don't exist. The Mayan calendar ends a cycle, but there were no predictions of the end of the world. The Sun doesn't line up with the galactic centre; it's 6 degrees off. No asteroids or comets are actually predicted to hit Earth.

All of this stuff was put together by crackpots in order to promote their books and TV shows, and shamelessly promoted by the History Channel. Don't take any of it seriously!

No! The Mayan calendar is ending in Dec 2012, but that's when the Mayan's just decided to stop making their calendar based off of astronomy. It has nothing to do with the Earth ending. That person is just a rabble rouser trying to make people fear. Remember Y2K? everybody thought the world was going to collapse? We had the problem fixed years before the year 2,000 ever came around! But media and others still were afraid and spread fear.

Civilization has been around for thousands of years, people can't see the future, you're going to be fine.

What he was referring to is 12/21/2008...

This belief stems from a Mayan prophecy which says this is the last day of an era/time-period.

Because this prophecy is not fully understood, some people (pessimists in my opinion) like to think that it's doomsday. Scientists who study these sorts of things, however, claim that this is just the end of the era we're in right now, and the next one will then begin on this date.

It has to to with astronomy, and it's rather confusing, but what I wrote above pretty much summarizes everything.

Don't worry about it too much, the world was also suppose to end in Y2K, remember? lol

Flamin' oath he's full of it. He's coming the raw prawn, he a bs artist.

I'd say the things a furphy, but a furphy should at least sound like it's true. This does not.

Note my fifth verse.

21 December 2012: The Boilerplate Answer

We hear each day "two oh one two"
The kids all ask if it is true.
"Nibiru, the planet we must fear,
Or planet X shall soon be here.
The Mayan count runs to an end.
I was told this by a friend.”

Nibiru the hoax world of Sitchin
Fit only for the garbage bin.
Devoid of fact, reason or wit,
Science laughs at all the talk of it.

Of planet “X” Nan Lieder cries,
And yet she won't look at the skies,
To come in four short years it's true,
The damn thing must be now in view!

"Where is it?" Science asks with glee,
"You said, 'Beware two thousand three!'
With Earth it didn't make a tryst,
We're very sure it don't exist!"

Galactic lines are the next fright,
And yet the angles are not right.
“Six degrees off!” the scientists say,
“It happens near each solstice day.”
But it would no difference make,
You can be sure the thing’s a fake.

"Planets align!" or so some say
"It will be on that very day."
Yet naught of fact now can they quote,
I'd like to take them by the throat
And try to squeeze some truth right in,
But murder now they say's a sin.

Failed prophets, fools, those full of fraud,
Are people with whom we all are bored.

Copyright to me, and subject to “improvement” as
and when the inspiration strikes.

Ken E

No scientist has said this. No person who has any claim to common sense has this idea. The people pushing this are anti-scientists and anti Christian too. They get their jollies from frightening kids and ignorant or stupid adults. They also make money out of selling worthless books, videos and pseudo-documentaries to the Hysteria Channel.

alright well there is alot of talk about how we are heating the world up...how many of the creatures are becoming extinct...does anyone out there think the world is about to start a freeze cycle? i think it is. so if the world is going to freeze over again and we are 50000 years over due for it then why not? lets have some fun people! i want it to freeze then see who makes it and see who Dosent its like the wild wild west only really cold instead of hot! anyone else wanna help me out i say somewhere that the earth will be in a new place well what if we have already been there 200000 years before and that is why the mayan stopped writing the calendars? maybe...get back at me someone

Hmmm any power that can reach across from thousands of light years and destroy solar systems wouldn't have such a narrow focus. We would be observing stars exploding all around us in a pattern of destruction heading our way like a tidal wave. Sounds like a bad science fiction novel.
In the year 2 thousand and 12 the sweet baby Jesus will be reborn and will be known to all as Jebus 2.0
The world will rejoice as the little baby Jebus is made the king of the world and everyone lives in peace and prosperity. Then someone forgets to change his diaper and he strips the planet of all life by causing a super flare to erupt from the sun scorching everything on the surface of the earth.
Sound ridiculous? Of course, so does the world ending for no reason other than an expired calender.

Hahaha No.
If you can remember, the world was also supposed to end on the 2000 millenium because all technoligy was going to fail;
then again on June 6th, 2006 (6/6/6).
They just say its going to end because 12/21/12 was the last day made on the Mayan calender
But i mean REALLY, if you were a Mayan, youd get tired after making so many calenders ! ! ! Haha
I guess they figured wed have a little technology and the abililty to continue tracking dates by now, they were right. :p
